Child Support

In Massachusetts, whenever child support is an issue, the court typically orders the noncustodial parent to pay a percentage of his or her gross income to the custodial parent for the support of the minor children. The amount of support is usually determined by applying the “child support guidelines.”

A judge can deviate from the child support guidelines if the court determines that it would be in the best interest of the children and makes specific written findings stating the reasons why the guidelines should not apply.
